While the severity and duration of these conflicts differ, they all have significant impacts on the affected populations and can result in a high number of casualties as well as humanitarian crises.” These are civil wars, ethnic conflicts, etc.
The causes of war and its effects are well studied, and the destruction it ensues are obvious for all to see. Just in 2023 thousands, may be millions have died, millions have been displaced, enormous cost on the economy is witnessed. In spite of all these consequences, the world and its international organizations seem impotent to reduce conflicts around the globe.
Maybe, we have become accustomed to wars and destructions that it has become our second nature, something we can’t do without, may be, there are those who benefit (profit) from it, maybe, the political leadership is simply stupid, maybe, the citizens are stupider for not making the politicians accountable.
In the world we live in today, the few, the loud, those void of vision are trying to confuse and distract the masses of the people from pursuing real agendas of democracy, economic development, health care, equitable distribution of wealth, etc. The agenda of the few is to sow discord among the people.
IN 2012, President Obama gave a speech at the UNGA focusing on tolerance. In his speech, he uttered the following sentences,
“A politics based only on anger –one based on dividing the world between us and them — not only sets back international cooperation, it ultimately undermines those who tolerate it.”
“It is time to leave the call of violence and the politics of division behind. On so many issues, we face a choice between the promise of the future, or the prisons of the past.”
“It is time to heed the words of Gandhi:” “Intolerance is itself a form of violence and an obstacle to the growth of a true democratic spirit.”
